I Scream, “Sunday!”

From POLITICAL ANIMAL at Washington MONTHLY (October 23, 2009):

SUNDAY SHOW BOOKERS REFUSE TO READ POLITICAL ANIMAL…. Maybe I should start taking this personally.

Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) has been booked for yet another Sunday talk show appearance this weekend — this time on CBS’ Face The Nation. Despite a “wildly unsuccessful presidential campaign” last year and his comparative irrelevancy in the U.S. Senate, this will mark the 15th time McCain has appeared on a Sunday talk show since January.

…snip…

Since the president took office, McCain has been on “Meet the Press” twice (July 12 and March 29), “This Week” three times (September 27, August 23, and May 10), “Fox News Sunday” three times (July 2, March 8, and January 25), and CNN’s “State of the Union” three times (October 11, August 2, and February 15). His appearance on “Face the Nation” this weekend will be his fourth appearance since February (October 25, August 30, April 26, and February 8).

Squawk Radio

From The Boston Globe:

Talk show host Jay Severin offered a “sincere apology” today for “hurtful, unkind, and wrong” remarks he made about Mexicans in the midst of the swine flu panic, vowing to do better as he returned to the air on Boston’s WTKK-FM following a month-long suspension.

…snip…

WTKK suspended the right-wing talk show host on April 30 after he described Mexicans as “primitives” and “leeches” and called Mexico an exporter of “women with mustaches and VD,” among other comments.

Dumb Blondes

From USA Today:

Donald Trump says Carrie Prejean’s photos are “fine” and her crown will stay put. “Carrie will remain Miss California.”

The Donald also said at this morning’s press conference: “We had a little bit of a dilemma with Carrie, who is here, lovely, and gave a very, very honest answer when asked a very tough question (about gay marriage) at the recent pageant. It’s the same answer the president of the U.S. gave, the same answer many people gave. It was probably a fair question because it’s asked of many people. If her beauty wasn’t so great, nobody really would have cared. But that’s not the way it worked out.”

Nothing Free about Freedom of Information

From MSNBC:

Sarah Palin’s office has discovered a renewable resource to bring millions of dollars into Alaska’s economy: the governor’s e-mails.

The office of the Republican vice-presidential nominee has quoted prices as high as $15 million for copies of state e-mails requested by news organizations and citizens. No matter what the price, most of the e-mails of Palin, her senior staff and other state employees won’t be made public until at least several weeks after the Nov. 4 presidential election, her office told msnbc.com on Thursday.

Can You Hear Me Now?

From The Washington Post:

Prominent conservative columnist Peggy Noonan and former John McCain campaign manager Michael Murphy made disparaging comments Wednesday about the Republican’s choice of Sarah Palin as his running mate, after a segment that aired on NBC with Chuck Todd. Thinking that the microphone had been turned off — or, perhaps, that the video signal had stopped transmitting — Noonan and Murphy ripped into Palin as someone who would weigh down the GOP ticket.

“It’s over,” said Noonan.

Meat the Pwess

NEW YORK (AP) — No one doubts she’s hard-driving. But she has never learned to drive, Barbara Walters reveals in her new memoir, “Audition.”

…snip…

And she allots six pages from the book’s 612 for a startling confession: Her “long and rocky affair” in the 1970s with politician who was married and — further upping the ante — an African American. This covert romance between U.S. Senator Edward Brooke and Walters, then co-host of NBC’s “Today” show, made headlines (and raised eyebrows) when it was leaked last week.

The Big Shill

Hey kids, The New York Times has published an eleven-page article by David Barstow that is absolutely fascinating, and I suggest you read the whole thing. Here are snippets:

In the summer of 2005, the Bush administration confronted a fresh wave of criticism over Guantánamo Bay. The detention center had just been branded “the gulag of our times” by Amnesty International, there were new allegations of abuse from United Nations human rights experts and calls were mounting for its closure.

The administration’s communications experts responded swiftly. Early one Friday morning, they put a group of retired military officers on one of the jets normally used by Vice President Dick Cheney and flew them to Cuba for a carefully orchestrated tour of Guantánamo.

To the public, these men are members of a familiar fraternity, presented tens of thousands of times on television and radio as “military analysts” whose long service has equipped them to give authoritative and unfettered judgments about the most pressing issues of the post-Sept. 11 world.

Hidden behind that appearance of objectivity, though, is a Pentagon information apparatus that has used those analysts in a campaign to generate favorable news coverage of the administration’s wartime performance, an examination by The New York Times has found.
