“They do not grasp their essential irrelevance.”

There is an excellent essay at VANITY FAIR written by SARAH ELLISON that discusses the ever-evaporating influence and power of Twitler’s daughter/wife and her husband. It’s very long, so I will just give you a smattering of amuse-bouches to whet your appetite for the entire thing.

“What is off-putting about them,” one political veteran told me, “is they do not grasp their essential irrelevance. They think they are special.”

Writers’ Schlock

From twitchy:

Blame Matt Yglesias for setting off Monday’s torrent of fake news about Chelsea Clinton with a tweet suggesting she’s running for office, which of course she’s never said she’s doing.

You can click over there and read the collection of tweets (because I still can’t figure out how to embed tweets here). I want to focus on some of the male  journalists who have nothing more important to do than to diss Chelsea. Among them: the aforementioned Matt Yglesias, Josh Barro, and CNN’s new hire Chris Cillizza.

Chris Cillizza indicates the size of their collective weewees as Matt Yglesias and Josh Barro look on.

Gall In the Family

From Think Progress:

There’s supposed to be a firewall between President Trump and the business he continues to own, which is being run by his his two adult sons, Eric and Donald Jr. Both Trump Sr. and Eric have recently made public statements about their commitment to making sure the presidency doesn’t becoming a money-making venture for the Trump family.

But there’s already been indications that firewall isn’t as firm as it should be.

Die-nasty

(Reuters) – It was one of many strange moments in a hearing rich in absurdity. As British lawmakers questioned Rupert Murdoch last month over whether his News of the World journalists broke the law by hacking into mobile phones, the 80-year-old Australian-born boss of media giant News Corporation began to reminiscence about his late father.

…snip…

Member of Parliament Damian Collins tried to get the hearing back on track, but Murdoch, sitting beside his son James, the head of News Corp’s non-U.S. interests, continued: “That just addresses the question of it being a family business. I would love to see my sons and daughters follow that route — if they are interested.”

What Murdoch’s children are interested in may no longer matter.

Sour Miss Brooks

Note: Right after I finished the post, I read that Rebekah Brooks has resigned. Les Hinton, chief executive of News Corp’s Dow Jones unit has followed suit and resigned as well. All the king’s horseshit and all the king’s men won’t be able to put News Corp together again.

From The New Zealand Herald:

Saudi billionaire Prince Alwaleed bin Talal, a major shareholder in Rupert Murdoch’s scandal-hit News Corp. organisation, says under-fire executive Rebekah Brooks “had to go”.

“For sure she has to go, you bet she has to go,” News Corp.’s second largest shareholder said of Brooks on BBC’s Newsnight programme.

This Canary Should Be a Jailbird

From Scott Horton at The Daily Beast:

When a former Alabama governor was convicted for selling public offices, it set off an investigation into improper conduct at the Justice Department that leads directly to the White House.

The most dramatic political prosecution in the 21st century—involving a former governor in Alabama, the U.S. Attorney’s office, and the Bush White House and Justice Department—has been rocked by incriminating new disclosures by a knowledgeable career Justice Department staff member who has provided information charging serious misconduct by the prosecutors.

Among other disclosures shattering the credibility of the case, U.S. Attorney Leura Canary’s “recusal” for conflict of interest is revealed as a sham. Moreover, The Daily Beast has learned, the matter has touched off concerns within the Justice Department over efforts to sweep accusations of unethical conduct under the carpet.

It appears the Justice Department was aware of even more startling allegations of misconduct but it chose to hide this from the court and from opposing counsel.
