The Shrill of It All

From TALKING POINTS MEMO:

Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-MN) posed for a picture with Birther leader and California secretary of state candidate Orly Taitz at a tea party lunch event in California Friday, Taitz tells TPM.

Taitz and Bachmann both spoke at a lunch sponsored by the Tea Party Patriots, Taitz said in an email. But Birtherism did not come up at the event, according to Taitz.

Sometimes you feel like a nut, sometimes you don’t

From The Oakland Tribune:

LOS ANGELES — Several California Republican politicians, including Senate candidate Carly Fiorina, are scheduled to share the stage this week with one of the leaders of the “birther” movement that asserts President Barack Obama was not born in this country and is thus ineligible for his elected office.

Orly Taitz, an Orange County attorney who has gone to court many times to try to disqualify Obama, was invited to speak Thursday at a Tax Day Tea Party rally in Pleasanton that is expected to draw thousands. Late Tuesday, organizers said that they had rescinded Taitz’s invitation after questions were raised about her presence by candidates who had been contacted by the Los Angeles Times.

Goodbye 2009!

To the tune of My Favorite Things (music by Richard Rodgers, lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II):

Birthers and Deathers, and all kinds of crazy,
A Twitterer quits, ’cause she’s just too damned lazy,
Rescuing banks ’cause they’re too big to fail,
Tales about the Appalachian trail.

If their lips are flappin’, a bull is crappin’

From Politifact:

PolitiFact readers overwhelming chose Sarah Palin’s claim that the health care bill contains “death panels” as Lie of the Year. A resounding 61 percent of our 4,864 voters picked death panels as the top lie. No other finalist in the field of eight statements came close.

The Orly Bird Catches the Worm…I mean, a Fine

From npr:

Federal District Judge Clay D. Land [appointed by George W. Bush] has slapped top birther Orly Taitz with a $20,000 fine for wasting the court’s time, among other issues, with her constant filings after he, last month, dismissed her lawsuit against President Obama’s right as commander-in-chief to deploy the military because he allegedly isn’t legally president.

Because he didn’t get rid of her the first time, he’s hoping she gets the message this time from the barbed language in the 43-page order he issued Tuesday.

Puttin’ on the Ditz

From Mike Papantonio at the Pensacola News Journal:

In recent weeks, Democrats have made progress with their leadership management skills. Here is what they have figured out: When your opposition is burning down, don’t get involved. Sit back and allow it to happen.

For example, when the GOP floats the story that Obama is building concentration camps to house conservative critics, just hush, sit quietly and let them tell that story. When Glenn Beck goes on the air to tell us about those new Obama concentration camps, don’t interrupt him even when it’s clear that those buildings he’s afraid of are probably mental health facilities.

Or when their party leader, Sarah Palin, suggests that Obama’s health care reform plan includes a death panel that will condemn elderly Americans to die if they require too much medical care, remember: Sit quietly and let the lunatics loose on themselves.

Chuck Norris? O RLY?

From THE HUFFINGTON POST:

In a column Tuesday, actor and conservative political figure Chuck Norris argued that President Obama should release his birth certificate. Norris said that he finds it “a bit of a groundless stretch” to believe the president is not from Hawaii. Yet, he tells Obama, “Refusing to post your original birth certificate is an unwise political and leadership decision that is enabling the “birther” controversy.” And he adds that the president’s alleged reluctance suggests that he does have something to hide — even if he was born in the U.S.

CNN: Conspiracy Nuts Network

From Salon:

This week, the birthers — the movement that believes President Obama is not a natural-born citizen of the U.S. and thus not eligible to be president — have gone mainstream, and in a big way. That’s due in part to a YouTube video of a woman shouting at Rep. Mike Castle, R-Del., about Obama’s birth certificate. It’s also the work of CNN’s Lou Dobbs, who’s apparently found yet another conspiracy theory to love.

Dobbs actually first began giving the birthers a boost last week, when he had Alan Keyes, who ran against Obama in 2004 and 2008 and is now suing over the president’s birth certificate, on his radio show, along with Keyes’ lawyer, Orly Taitz, the “queen bee” of the birthers. Since then, he’s latched on to the movement, discussing it several times on his radio show and on CNN. On a night he was off, a fill-in host on “Lou Dobbs Tonight” interviewed Keyes and Taitz.
