Guess Who Didn’t Come to Dinner!

If you didn’t see Hasan Minhaj at the White House Correspondence Dinner last night, you must correct that immediately! From Vox:

“This has been one of the strangest events I’ve ever done in my life,” Daily Show correspondent Hasan Minhaj said late in his set at Saturday’s White House Correspondent’s Dinner, before going on to say he felt like a tribute in the Hunger Games, waiting to see “if Steve Bannon is going to eat me.”

It was part of a good, but odd, performance from the comedian, who was hampered by the fact that the person he spent the most time making fun of — President Donald Trump himself — wasn’t in the room. (For his part, Trump accused the media of spreading “fake news” and said they deserved a “big fat failing grade” during a rally for supporters the same evening in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania.)

Hasan has been my favorite Daily Show correspondent for a while, but right now, to me he is….

From Secession to Oppression

From my SA:

Anita Perry, wife of Republican presidential hopeful and Texas Gov. Rick Perry, has taken a bold leap into the national spotlight in recent weeks, assuming a more prominent role in her husband’s campaign and speaking about her Christian faith in a way that resonates with evangelicals, but surprises old friends.

…snip…

Her public statements this month that she pushed her husband into the presidential ring because she felt he was being called by God caught Bill Miller off guard.“I always viewed Anita as someone who took politics with a gigantic grain of salt. She would rather go to a baseball game for her kid than an inaugural,” said Miller, an Austin lobbyist who hired Anita Perry in the 1990s.

Cold-Blooded Murdoch

From The Telegraph:

Rupert Murdoch’s Fox News television channel had a “black ops” department that may have illegally hacked private telephone records, a former executive for the station has alleged.

Comedy of Terrors

From The CHRISTIAN SCIENCE MONITOR:

Christine O’Donnell and Sarah Palin: Top 5 comedic comparisons

What do Christine O’Donnell and Sarah Palin have in common?

You mean, aside from the obvious? “Just give [O’Donnell] bangs and a pair of rimmed glasses and she’d be a dead ringer for…” Jon Stewart said on his show, flashing side by side photos of the two women after O’Donnell’s victory in the Delaware Senate primaries last week.

Political commentators can’t resist the comparison, not just on where O’Donnell and Palin stand on the issues, but in other aspects as well, especially considering Sarah Palin’s endorsement and mentoring of what many are calling her own “Mini-me.”

Why should comedians be any different?

Simon Says: “Mr. Beck, you are a con man”

From THINK PROGRESS :

In a Washington Post op-ed last month, Simon Greer — the president and CEO of Jewish Funds for Justice, an organization that helps people achieve social and economic security by investing in healthy neighborhoods — bluntly rebuked Glenn Beck for his war against social justice.

“Mr. Beck, you are a con man and America is not buying it,” Greer wrote. “When churches, synagogues, mosques, and other houses of worship across this country advocate for social justice, advocate for the common good, advocate for America, they, and we, walk in God’s path.”

Yesterday on his radio station, Beck responded the only way he knows how — with hyperbolic, extreme rhetoric referencing Nazi imagery. Beck said that Greer’s advocacy for the common good and social justice “leads to death camps.” “A Jew, of all people, should know that,” Beck added. “This is exactly the kind of talk that led to the death camps in Germany.”

Heavens to Betsy! You’re Fired!

From MEDIA MATTERS:

The Washington Independent highlights Betsy McCaughey’s resignation from the board of directors of Cantel Medical Corp., a medical products company, to “avoid any appearance of a conflict of interest.” McCaughey’s resignation coincides with her attempt to revive her false end-of-life counseling smears on The Daily Show.

According to Cantel’s press release:

LITTLE FALLS, N.J., Aug 21, 2009 /PRNewswire-FirstCall via COMTEX News Network/ — CANTEL MEDICAL CORP. (NYSE: CMN) announced that on August 20, 2009 it received a letter of resignation from Ms. Elizabeth McCaughey as a director of the Company. Ms. McCaughey, who had served as a director since 2005, stated that she was resigning to avoid any appearance of a conflict of interest during the national debate over healthcare reform.

McCaughey has been on Cantel’s board since 2005, but her apparent conflict of interest hasn’t kept CNN and Fox News from repeatedly hosting her to spread false attacks on health care reform.

All that translates to: Old Betsy Wetsy made such a fool of herself on The Daily Show that she got canned!

Too much coffee makes your eyes squint

From cnjonline:

It’s blissful that the worst thing that’s happened to me on recent shifts is getting home just in time to miss “The Daily Show,” and having to wait for reruns on the latest tit-for-tat.

In one corner is “Daily Show” host Jon Stewart, who mocked MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” news program for its uncomfortable tie-ins to the Starbucks coffee franchise. They landed the first show, with video edited together of in-show praising of Starbucks beverages.

No kidding!

From the Los Angeles Times:

On his HBO show, “Real Time With Bill Maher,” the comedian routinely makes vicious fun of celebrities, politicians, presidents and even God. But he’s learned that, for much of his audience, Barack Obama is off limits.
