Only dead fish go with the flow.
–Sarah Palin July 3, 2009
From Eugene Robinson at The Washington Post:
What can you say about a public official who ridicules those who would take the “quitter’s way out” — as she faces reporters to announce that she’s quitting? A governor who claims that “the worthless, easy path” would be to serve out the remaining 18 months of her term? An ambitious politician who says that “life is too short” to worry about, you know, boring things such as responsibility or duty?
You can say that all of us who ever took Sarah Palin seriously — or pretended to take her seriously — should be deeply ashamed. And you can say that John McCain should publicly apologize for putting the nation he loves at risk by choosing Palin as his running mate.

From Michael Carey at the Los Angeles Times (Op-Ed):
Reporting from Anchorage — Sarah Palin’s career as governor of Alaska is over. So is her barely begun career as a serious presidential candidate. The road map to the White House doesn’t include a stop at “I quit.”
In a truly Palinesque moment near the end of her speech in Wasilla on Friday, the departing governor quoted a saying she said her parents kept on their refrigerator. “Don’t explain: Your friends don’t need it, and your enemies won’t believe you anyway.”
The governor might have done better to take her cue from another piece of refrigerator wisdom: “Quitters never win, and winners never quit.”

(Note: This post was put together before the breaking news today that Princess Sarah has resigned.)
(CBS) The tension between Alaska Governor Sarah Palin and top McCain campaign aides in the closing days of last fall’s presidential campaign is elucidated in a profile in the new issue of Vanity Fair.
Internal campaign e-mails exchanged three weeks before Election Day offer a rare look at just how frustrated then Republican vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin had become with the manner in which top McCain campaign aides were handling her candidacy. The e-mails, obtained exclusively, also highlight the power struggle and thinly veiled acrimony that pervaded the relationship between Palin and the campaign’s chief strategist, Steve Schmidt.

From THE HUFFINGTON POST:
Fox New is denying claims that Doug Hampton — whose wife Cynthia is the other woman in Senator John Ensign’s sex scandal — sent the network a letter pleading for help exposing the affair five days before the Senator announced it in a press conference and that Ensign came forward with the affair because he knew Fox was working on the story.
The Las Vegas Sun reported Friday that Hampton sent Fox News’ Megyn Kelly a two-page, single-spaced letter dated June 11 detailing the affair and asking for help in exposing the Senator. The Senator came forward with the affair on June 16 — in part, a spokesman told the Sun, because his office had learned that Hampton approached “a major television news channel.”

With apologies to Gilbert and Sullivan. To the tune of The Mikado‘s Tit Willow:
On a late-night talk show, Let-ter-man made a joke,
About Bristol, not Willow, not Willow!
Sarah acted so mad, you’d think she’d have a stroke,
The silliness be-gan to billow.
I have to ask, Sarah, why oh why do you rave?
Is it simply to get the attention you crave?
If it is, don’t continue attacking poor Dave,
It’s about you, not Bristol, or Willow!

From Dana Milbank at The Washington Post:
As the Republican faithful filed in for cocktails at last night’s fundraiser at the Washington Convention Center, a musical group called the Right On Band was entertaining them with a soul tune:
Rock the boat, don’t rock the boat baby
Rock the boat, don’t tip the boat over
Guess what, kids. They didn’t listen. They rocked the boat…

Texas Gov. Rick Perry fired up an anti-tax “tea party” Wednesday with his stance against the federal government and for states’ rights as some in his U.S. flag-waving audience shouted, “Secede!”

From The Huffington Post:
While you read this, Alaska’s First Dude, Todd Palin, is riding a snowmobile — I’m sorry, snow machine — 1971 miles from Big Lake to Fairbanks. In the course of performing this awesome feat, his Arctic Cat’s powerful two-stroke engine will emit the same amount of hydrocarbons as an automobile driving from Chicago to San Francisco and back 150 times.
A small price for the rest of us to pay to honor the indomitability of the human spirit and one man’s ability to sit and hold on.
