The *Untied* States of America, Part 1

Kids, while we were all celebrating 2009, I’m afraid that we weren’t paying attention to what 2010 is going to bring. From The Wall Street Journal:

MOSCOW — For a decade, Russian academic Igor Panarin has been predicting the U.S. will fall apart in 2010.

…snip…

Prof. Panarin, 50 years old, is not a fringe figure. A former KGB analyst, he is dean of the Russian Foreign Ministry’s academy for future diplomats.

…snip…

A polite and cheerful man with a buzz cut, Mr. Panarin insists he does not dislike Americans. But he warns that the outlook for them is dire.

Uh-oh! SHOCK2 Here’s Panarin’s new map (found at the above link):

That got me thinking about how politicians will react to the new landscape. It seems some of them have already gotten word of the changes, and I have photos of how they are adapting.

Oxy-morons

From the Times Online:

THE rambunctious extended family of Sarah Palin, the Republican governor of Alaska who ran for US vice-president, produced a fresh scandal this weekend when the mother of her daughter’s fiancé was arrested on drug charges.

Sherry Johnston, 42, was arrested on six charges relating to the prescription drug oxycontin, which is widely known as “hillbilly heroin”.

Oy, do I have a guy for her!!!

For the Birds

From The Washington Post:

Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin visited a turkey farm in her home town of Wasilla yesterday to grant the traditional Thanksgiving pardon to one turkey. But as the former Republican vice presidential hopeful took questions from reporters, a farm worker was seen slaughtering other turkeys and feeding the birds into a grinder.

Video by KTUU-TV of the governor and the bloody work over her shoulder became an overnight YouTube hit. Holding a cup of coffee, Palin said of the outing at Triple D Farms, “Oh, this was neat.”

A Bigger Slice of the Eskimo Pie

From Reason:

A few years ago, in the wake of Hurricane Katrina, Sen. Tom Coburn of Oklahoma suggested taking money earmarked for a notoriously extravagant “bridge to nowhere” in Alaska and using it for reconstruction in Louisiana. Sen. Ted Stevens of Alaska, a fellow Republican, angrily declared, “This is the first time I have seen any attempt by any senator to treat my state…differently from any other state.”

In a tirade that included threats to behave like “a wounded bull on the floor of the Senate,” to “be taken out of here on a stretcher,” and to “resign from this body,” Stevens’ insistence that all he wanted was equal treatment for Alaska may have been the least believable thing he said. During the last four decades, no one has done more than Stevens to ensure that Alaska is treated unequally, receiving far more in federal spending than it pays in taxes.

Just Like Dr. Pepper, So Misunderstood!

From Politico:

After enduring three days of brutal postmortem attacks, Sarah Palin and a group of Republicans who worked with her during the presidential race are pushing back hard against claims that she was a “diva” who helped tank John McCain’s campaign.

“I never asked for anything more than a Diet Dr Pepper once in a while,” Palin told reporters as she returned to the governor’s office Friday.

It’s true! Princess Sarah is still the same sweet undemanding girl she always was, as Miss Wasilla….

Y’all don’t come back now, y’hear?

From Newsweek:

Newsweek has […] learned that [Sarah] Palin’s shopping spree at high-end department stores was more extensive than previously reported. While publicly supporting Palin, McCain’s top advisers privately fumed at what they regarded as her outrageous profligacy. One senior aide said that Nicolle Wallace had told Palin to buy three suits for the convention and hire a stylist. But instead, the vice presidential nominee began buying for herself and her family—clothes and accessories from top stores such as Saks Fifth Avenue and Neiman Marcus. According to two knowledgeable sources, a vast majority of the clothes were bought by a wealthy donor, who was shocked when he got the bill. Palin also used low-level staffers to buy some of the clothes on their credit cards. The McCain campaign found out last week when the aides sought reimbursement. One aide estimated that she spent “tens of thousands” more than the reported $150,000, and that $20,000 to $40,000 went to buy clothes for her husband. Some articles of clothing have apparently been lost. An angry aide characterized the shopping spree as “Wasilla hillbillies looting Neiman Marcus from coast to coast,” and said the truth will eventually come out when the Republican Party audits its books.

Captain Underpants’s Campaign Goes Down the Drain

WASHINGTON (Fortune) — John McCain has tried to paint his Democratic opponent as a big-spending, big-taxing liberal.

…snip…

How do you condemn Obama as a Big-Government Liberal when your fellow Republicans in the White House are busily nationalizing portions of the country’s biggest banks, bailing out the world’s largest insurer, taking over semi-private mortgage securities firms – and, along the way, putting several hundred billion dollars in taxpayer money at risk? When your own plan, borrowed from Hillary Clinton, commands the Treasury Department to spend $300 billion to buy up home mortgages from people who can’t make their payments?

So in Wednesday’s debate, McCain shifted tactics to accuse Obama of being one of those liberals eager to take your hard-earned wealth and redistribute it to those less hard working or less fortunate. And that’s when we got to meet Joe the Plumber, whose name came up 26 times in the course of 90 minutes.

Freak Radicals

From Salon:

Oct. 10, 2008 PALMER, Alaska — | On the afternoon of Sept. 24 in downtown Palmer, Alaska, as the sun began to sink behind the snowcapped mountains that flank the picturesque Mat-Su Valley, 51-year-old Mark Chryson sat for an hour on a park bench, reveling in tales of his days as chairman of the Alaska Independence Party. The stocky, gray-haired computer technician waxed nostalgic about quixotic battles to eliminate taxes, support the “traditional family” and secede from the United States.

…snip…

Though Chryson belongs to a fringe political party, one that advocates the secession of Alaska from the Union, and that organizes with other like-minded secessionist movements from Canada to the Deep South, he is not without peculiar influence in state politics, especially the rise of Sarah Palin. An obscure figure outside of Alaska, Chryson has been a political fixture in the hometown of the Republican vice-presidential nominee for over a decade. During the 1990s, when Chryson directed the AIP, he and another radical right-winger, Steve Stoll, played a quiet but pivotal role in electing Palin as mayor of Wasilla and shaping her political agenda afterward. Both Stoll and Chryson not only contributed to Palin’s campaign financially, they played major behind-the-scenes roles in the Palin camp before, during and after her victory.
