Bewitched, Bothered, and BeWillard

From POLITICO:

Former tea party candidate and U.S. Senate hopeful Christine O’Donnell has cast a, er, endorsement Mitt Romney’s way.

…snip…

Mostly, O’Donnell is best remembered for the “I’m not a witch, I’m you” ad that she produced, through admaker Fred Davis (now with the Jon Huntsman super PAC), which was met with much derision.

Derision?  I wonder from whom.

Hanni-tea Insani-tea

From Howard Fineman at THE HUFFINGTON POST:

WASHINGTON — Christine O’Donnell may not be a witch, but she knows how to use scare tactics to raise money, top Republican strategists and officials here tell me.

They say the Delaware Republican is loudly complaining about how they won’t support her — and they are not — as a way to generate angry, send-them-a-message donations from her Tea Party base.

Specifically, according to two top GOP insiders, she said at a strategy meeting with DC types last week: “I’ve got Sean Hannity in my back pocket, and I can go on his show and raise money by attacking you guys.”

Take Them Out! To the ballgame, I mean.

From Mitchell Bard at THE HUFFINGTON POST:

Noted football coach Bill Parcells once said, “You are what your record says you are.”

Parcells’ quote jumped into my mind when I was thinking about the slate of Tea Party-influenced Republicans running in November. I feel like we’ve become immune to the stories about the extreme and, sometimes, downright delusional things they’ve said, since they’ve come in a steady stream over the past several months. But if you step back and look at the group as a whole (or at least some of the leading Tea Party favorites), you can get a real sense of what the Republican Party is offering voters in November.

Rowdy With a Chance of Screwballs

From Betsy Reed at THE Nation:

In the media spectacle that is the 2010 midterm elections, women of the GOP are playing starring roles. They have figured prominently in nearly every plot and subplot that holds any real interest or potential for debased amusement: from Indian-American Nikki Haley’s triumph over her mudslinging male rivals for the GOP gubernatorial nod in South Carolina, to Carly Fiorina’s catty open-mic swipe at her opponent Barbara Boxer’s hair in the first-ever contest between two women for a California Senate seat, to WWF founder and Connecticut Senate hopeful Linda McMahon’s gifts to oh-so-lucky Democratic ad firms (including video of the candidate physically attacking a buxom, scantily clad woman purporting to be her husband’s lover), to the daily dose of clips revealing Christine O’Donnell’s youthful preoccupations with witchcraft and masturbation. Remember when politics was boring?

I wouldn’t vote for her, I love lucid!

(CNN) — American politics has a photogenic new face with a troubled past of bad finances, potential fraud and a flirtation with witchcraft.

A previously unknown conservative activist named Christine O’Donnell is a sudden political sensation and Washington is trying to figure out what to make of her.

“Certainly she has some explaining to do,” Republican Congressman Mike Pence said this week.

Chrissssiiiiiiie!! You got some ‘splainin’ to do!!!!

Cupcakes? I think Twinkies is more like it!

From Gene Lyons at  Salon:

To the connoisseur of American political theater, the most entertaining aspect of the 2010 election season has been the rise of the right-wing cuties — political celebrities whose main qualification is looking terrific on television. From where I sit, in a comfortable chair in front of the tube, the GOP Cupcake Factor has enlivened an otherwise dreary campaign season.

To put it another way: If you don’t love Christine O’Donnell, you don’t love America. The Republican Senate nominee from Delaware exemplifies a basic truth about politics in the age of cable television: An attractive woman with a glib demeanor and a telegenic smile almost can’t be too crazy.

I don’t think Sharron the Obtuse Angle qualifies as a cupcake. Maybe a stale slice of pound cake that’s only half-baked.

Comedy of Terrors

From The CHRISTIAN SCIENCE MONITOR:

Christine O’Donnell and Sarah Palin: Top 5 comedic comparisons

What do Christine O’Donnell and Sarah Palin have in common?

You mean, aside from the obvious? “Just give [O’Donnell] bangs and a pair of rimmed glasses and she’d be a dead ringer for…” Jon Stewart said on his show, flashing side by side photos of the two women after O’Donnell’s victory in the Delaware Senate primaries last week.

Political commentators can’t resist the comparison, not just on where O’Donnell and Palin stand on the issues, but in other aspects as well, especially considering Sarah Palin’s endorsement and mentoring of what many are calling her own “Mini-me.”

Why should comedians be any different?
