Fear Factor

From THE HUFFINGTON POST:

The contest to be the member of Congress saying the dumbest possible things about health care has just gotten ratcheted up about a thousand more notches, thanks to North Carolina Representative Virginia Foxx. Foxx, if you recall, was the congressional luminary who declared the story of Matthew Shepard’s murder a “hoax,” right in front of Shepard’s mother. She’s a delight for the senses, especially the stupid ones!

Anyway, today she came up with a brand new health care reform objection when she said that the Republican health care plan — whatever that is! — would “make sure we bring down the cost of health care for all Americans and that ensures affordable access for all Americans and is pro-life because it will not put seniors in a position of being put to death by their government.”

(ChattahBox)—Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-TX) recently appeared on the radical right-wing radio show of Alex Jones and the two happily traded conspiracy theories, which touched on the more wackier pearls of Conservative fringe wisdom, including claims that the White house is spiking our water with drugs to sterilize the whole country and comparing Obama’s policies to Hitler and Chairman Mao.

Rep. Gohmert spoke for thirty minutes and engaged in the Republican fear-mongering about the inclusion of a public option in health care reform, claiming it “is going to absolutely kill senior citizens. They’ll put them on lists and force them to die early because they won’t get the treatment as early as they need,” said the Congressman.

Gohmert also claimed that a public health option would empower the government with “…every right to tell you what you eat, what you drink, how you exercise, where you live.” Gohmert didn’t stop there; he was on a roll.

The excited Congressman then tried his hardest to make an analogy between a recent bill to humanely manage the wild mustang population, entitled “Restore Our American Mustangs Act,” and government run health care that would somehow force people to use contraception against their will.

“But if we’re going to pay 700 million dollars like we voted last Friday to put condoms on wild horses, and I know it just says an un-permanent enhanced contraception whatever the heck that is. I guess it follows that they’re eventually get around to doing it to us,” said Gohmert.

From THINK PROGRESS:

In a speech on the House floor this afternoon [June 10th], Rep. Paul Broun (R-GA) railed against health care reform. Specifically, Broun attacked the idea of a public plan, saying “this program of ‘government option’ is being touted as being the panacea, the savior of allowing people to have quality health care at an affordable price is gonna kill people.” Broun pointed to Canada and the United Kingdom in his argument against the public option, claiming that those countries “don’t have the appreciation of life as we do in our society.”

As Media Matters Action points out, Canada and the United Kingdom actually enjoy both a lower infant mortality rate and longer life expectancy than the United States.

  1. That is EXACTLY what my neighbor was trying to convince me of yesterday…..the new bill was going to kill off the elderly!

    • it’s just ridiculous. all the bill does is allow people to choose what they want done in case they are near death, instead of leaving the choice up to their families. if they want extraordinary measures used to keep them alive, then that’s what they’ll get. if they choose to be take off life support, then they will be allowed to die with dignity. if terry schiavo had had a living will, that entire fiasco would not have taken place.

    >>>> These baseless scare tactics have that “Rove spin” feeling to them.

Never mind the facts…. just keep repeating the lies long & loud enough until they are believed to be true.

We desperately need to have public option health care…. of all the things this country pisses away money for… we could afford health care.

As far as I am concerned, we do not have a system.
We are being held hostage by insurance companies & big pharma.

I’d love to see an expose of what their profit margins are.

    • i just don’t understand why there aren’t as many dems screaming as there are rethugs. the dems (the good ones, not the blue dogs) should jump in front of every camera they see and dispel all the bullshit that the rethugs are spewing.

  3. Well, Tweety was having a cow over this on his show this evening too. He was just having fits that the amendment for a Living Will to be in HR3200 at all. He said it didn’t need to be in there, just as there should be no reproductive rights legislation in the bill either.

He sounded like he was taking Foxx’s side of the argument.

    • i saw that, annette. the correct response to that would have been 2 words–terry schiavo. if she had had a living will, the entire circus that played out around her would have been completely unnecessary. you don’t have to be of retirement age to think about end of life issues. i wanted to smack tweety–even more than i usually do!

      • Here it is from Media Matters.. They have the video and even refute his position. He was so wrong on the entire thing.
It is the first time Medicare has offered it as Lois Romano tried to tell him, but he was so over the top he couldn’t and wouldn’t listen to anything she had to say.

        http://tinyurl.com/klbdso

He is an ass, I seldom watch, but today was one of those days I did..

        • tweety goes into conversations with his mind made up. he doesn’t want to hear anything that might change his mind, so he just talks louder. i was just starting to tolerate him again with his excellent birther bashing, but he had to ruin it. thanks for the link, annette.

          • I’m sorry … who’s Tweety?

            • Chris Matthews. His show is Hardball.. but he is getting almost as bad as David Gregory in some instances.. and I don’t say that lightly.

              • Thanks. Not having cable, I don’t ever see Matthews, but I’ve heard very mixed reviews.

                • wickle,
he can be very, very good. he has an excellent grasp of history. on the other hand, he can be a real ass. he’s very loud, and he rarely allows anyone else to finish a thought. he sees everything through a pennsylvania/catholic perspective, and he has a hard time seeing other people’s viewpoints. he’s also been in the bubble a bit too long. he’s worked in d.c. for a long time, and though he likes to think he knows what the average joe out there is thinking, he really has no clue whatsoever.

  4. Virginia Foxx looks like she should be photoshopped onto the Church Lady’s body. As for Gohmert, one should know him by the company he keeps. Alex Jones is a notorious tinfoil-hatter whose Infowars site is listed as cranky for both politics and conspiracies by Crank Dot Net.

    • dana carvey dressed as a woman is more attractive than this biddy. i never heard of alex jones before i read that article, but i’m familiar with some of the crap that’s come out of the mouth of gohmert. he’s the male version of michele bachmann.

      • “the male version of michele bachmann.”

Oh, wow, a man in the GOP who’s farther out there than Ron Paul. I’d never have guessed.

        • here’s what he said about a bill that protects endangered species around the world:

Again I appreciate the sensitivities with regard to rare cats and dogs around the world. With regard to the previous votes on this bill in the House, to be specific, 227 Democrats voted “aye,” 67 Republicans voted “aye,” which also was about the same numbers, similar numbers, that voted for the bailout back in September, which was also a huge mistake. There was one Democrat that voted “no” and 118 Republicans that voted “no.”

But we are even in different times now. We are still borrowing money from the Chinese. And, once again, the irony here is incredible. We are going to borrow more money from the Chinese to possibly give them money back to create habitats for wild dogs and cats that are rare.

There is no assurance that if we did that we wouldn’t end up with moo goo dog pan or moo goo cat pan. There is no way to assure that money will not be wasted when it’s sent to foreign countries.

          🙄

LEAD, FOLLOW, OR GET OUT OF THE WAY. (Thomas Paine)

We have the 37th worst quality of healthcare in the developed world. Conservative estimates are that over 120,000 of you dies each year in America from treatable illness that people in other developed countries don’t die from. Rich, middle class, and poor a like. Insured and uninsured. Men, women, children, and babies. This is what being 37th in quality of healthcare means.

I know that many of you are angry and frustrated that REPUBLICANS! In congress are dragging their feet and trying to block TRUE healthcare reform. What republicans want is just a taxpayer bailout of the DISGRACEFUL GREED DRIVEN PRIVATE FOR PROFIT health insurance industry, and the DISGRACEFUL GREED DRIVEN PRIVATE FOR PROFIT healthcare industry. A trillion dollar taxpayer funded private health insurance bailout is all you really get without a robust government-run public option available on day one. Co-OP’s ARE NOT A SUBSTITUTE FOR A GOVERNMENT-RUN PUBLIC OPTION. They are a fraud being pushed by the GREED DRIVEN PRIVATE FOR PROFIT health insurance industry that is KILLING YOU!

YOU CANT HAVE AN INSURANCE MANDATE WITHOUT A ROBUST PUBLIC OPTION. MANDATING PRIVATE FOR PROFIT HEALTH INSURANCE AS YOUR ONLY CHOICE WOULD BE A DISASTER AND UNETHICAL, CORRUPT, AND MORALLY REPUGNANT. AND PROBABLY UNCONSTITUTIONAL AS WELL.

These industries have been slaughtering you and your loved ones like cattle for decades for profit. Including members of congress and their families. These REPUBLICANS are FOOLS!

Republicans and their traitorous allies have been trying to make it look like it’s President Obama’s fault for the delays, and foot dragging. But I think you all know better than that. President Obama inherited one of the worst government catastrophes in American history from these REPUBLICANS! And President Obama has done a brilliant job of turning things around, and working his heart out for all of us.

But Republicans think you are just a bunch of stupid, idiot, cash cows with short memories. Just like they did under the Bush administration when they helped Bush and Cheney rape America and the rest of the World.

But you don’t have to put up with that. And this is what you can do. The Republicans below will be up for reelection on November 2, 2010. Just a little over 13 months from now. And many of you will be able to vote early. So pick some names and tell their voters that their representatives (by name) are obstructing TRUE healthcare reform. And are sellouts to the insurance and medical lobbyist.

Ask them to contact their representatives and tell them that they are going to work to throw them out of office on November 2, 2010, if not before by impeachment, or recall elections. Doing this will give you something more to do to make things better in America. And it will help you feel better too.

There are many resources on the internet that can help you find people to call and contact. For example, many social networking sites can be searched by state, city, or University. Be inventive and creative. I can think of many ways to do this. But be nice. These are your neighbors. And most will want to help.

I know there are a few democrats that have been trying to obstruct TRUE healthcare reform too. But the main problem is the Bush Republicans. Removing them is the best thing tactically to do. On the other hand. If you can easily replace a democrat obstructionist with a supportive democrat, DO IT!

You have been AMAZING!!! my people. Don’t loose heart. You knew it wasn’t going to be easy saving the World. 🙂

    God Bless You

    • hello jack,
welcome to the raisin! 😀 please, tell us what you really think. don’t be shy! 😉

i can tell that you’re passionate about health care reform. i wish some of the dems were as passionate. they need to start amping up the responses to the rethuglican nonsense.

by they way, you need to update that list. martinez, bunning, gregg, and voinivich have decided not to run again, and hutchison is quitting to run for governor.

  6. My mom believes this crap. I love my mom to death, but I can’t talk to her about religion or politics, which ss odd because she’s no dummy, but she does by into FOX News, hook, line and sinker. It hurts knowing she thinks this way, but I just chalk it up to her getting old and the right wing playing upon the natural fearfulness of the elderly. That’s how I choose to see it in this case, anway.

Oh, Virginia Foxx is a fucking loon.

    • i understand your frustration, zirgar. i honestly can’t understand why older people feel comfortable watching faux news, even the intelligent ones. i guess the world is changing too quickly for them, and faux provides some kind of confirmation for all their fears. sometimes anger is used to counteract fear, so faux stirs up the anger.

  7. It’s not just the old.. my daughter is 36 and she thinks it is the right (no pun intended) thing to do too. She is enamoured of Hannity and believes every word that comes out of his mouth even when I show her he is lying. But the absolute worse thing for me is that she has gotten my 2 granddaughters brain washed along with her and they are only 15 and 9. They spout the GOP talking points as well as some of the talking heads do on my TeeVee Machine.. as a consequence I don’t even get to see them now.. It has really been hard and that’s part of what I have been going through.. So I can feel the pain and frustration that Zirgar is talking about..

    • oy vey! i’m really surprised when young kids buy into this crap. with so much information online, you’d think that their minds would be more open. they’re young, annette. there’s still hope for them.

  8. jeb

Well, I think there is definitely something in their water (or koolaid). How else to explain this batshit line as a non-comdedic rant?

    • i honestly think some reps, such as virginia foxx, are incredibly stupid gullible people who cannot lead, only follow. of course, that makes her very useful to the goopers in charge. they fax her with the talking points, and she’s a good little parrot who repeats them.

  9. foxx is the same foxxy lady that called matthew shepherd’s murder ” an incident” with mrs. shepherd in the audience

    she is a fucking asshole
    period
    and a liar
    period 2

    • she’s a real genius. here are some of her quotes (from watauga watch):

      1. “I’m misunderstood in the same way Jesse Helms was.” 2003, in an interview with GOPUSA while still a NC state Senator

      2. “The worst thing we can do is to get government involved in solving problems.” September 16, 2003, in the NC state Senate’s special session on medical malpractice lawsuit reform

      3. “I thought Mr. [Roger] Clemens made a very credible presentation here today. I have no reason to doubt him.” February 13, 2008, in a hearing before the US House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, looking into illegal “juicing” by professional athletes

      4. “I think the 16th Amendment is unconstitutional.” April 15, 2008, in an interview with Kathleen McFadden with the High Country Press. Foxx did not explain how a duly ratified addition to the Constitution could be “unconstitutional”

      5. “Governmental attempts to regulate and tax tobacco are no different than if the government were to regulate and tax Mountain Dew.” April 8, 2009. A close paraphrase of what she said to teenagers at North Surry High School, according to the editor of the Mt. Airy News

      6. “I also would like to point out that there was a bill — the hate crimes bill that’s called the Matthew Shepard bill is named after a very unfortunate incident that happened where a young man was killed, but we know that that young man was killed in the commitment of a robbery. It wasn’t because he was gay. This — the bill was named for him, hate crimes bill was named for him, but it’s really a hoax that continues to be used as an excuse for passing these bills.” April 29, 2009, on the floor of the U.S. Congress, with Matthew Shepherd’s mother sitting in the visitor gallery

      7. “There are no Americans who don’t have healthcare. Everybody in this country has access to healthcare.” July 24, 2009, in a Capitol Hill press conference

      8. A Republican health care plan would “make sure we bring down the cost of health care for all Americans and that ensures affordable access for all Americans and is pro-life because it will not put seniors in a position of being put to death by their government.” July 28, 2009, on the floor of the U.S. Congress
