From Mother Jones:

Does Huckabee Believe Angels Intervene in Hunting Contests?

Whuuuuhhhhh?

Original DVD cover.

The surging social conservative who once was a Baptist preacher, as AP reports, is refusing to discuss theology and the “intricate, nit-picky things of church doctrine”–even though he recently attributed his success in the polls to divine intervention. For instance, he has declined in recent days to talk about his view of creationism (at an early debate he indicated he supports it) or to say whether he believes women should be permitted to serve in pastoral leadership roles (a controversial matter within some fundamentalist circles).

…snip…

Huckabee gave a rather intriguing speech at the NRA in September, during which he deftly merged his heartfelt evangelical beliefs with his deep passion for gun rights and hunting. He recalled the time he was in an antelope hunting contest in Wyoming. After several hours of stalking prey on a miserably cold, windy and snowy day, Huckabee had his chance. An antelope was 250 yards away, but right at the edge of his range as a shooter. Then a miracle happened:

I decided that one way or the other, this hunt is about to be over, because I can’t stand any more of this cold. And somehow, by the grace of God, when I squeezed the trigger, my Weatherby .300 Mag, which has got to be the greatest gun, I think, ever made in the form of a rifle — for my sake in hunting, I’ve never squeezed the trigger and not gotten something — did its work, and somehow the angels took that bullet and went right to the antelope, and my hunt was over in a wonderful way.

Thanks to those angels, that elk was dead.

Thank goodness there’s no gun control in heaven! Hmmm, I wonder what poor old Harry Whittington did to piss off the angels.

I wonder if I am the only republican who is not a christian??

Why do so many think that republican automatically equals bible thumping, dinosaur denying racist cracker?

    uughh I give up…

  2. nightowl724

    Oh. My. Well.

That elk was obviously not Christian. The Evangelical Rulebook clearly states that, “any ‘dumb’ animal (including humans), if desiring protection from God and/or his representative angels, said beast must 1) convert to humanity (if needed), and then 2) convert to Radical Christianity. Neither the Church nor the One True God shall be held responsible for claimed ignorance of or failure to follow said rules. No exceptions.” It was the elk’s own fault and his soul will surely burn in hell for all eternity because of his sins.

Coming soon: a whole line of angelic guns and ammo!

  3. nightowl724

fotc, please see my comment to you at nonnie’s Christmas St’eve. OK?

  4. nonnie9999

i never said that every rethuglican is a bible-thumping dinosaur-denying racist cracker. with his own words, huckleberry has defined himself as all of that, with the exception of racist. i also think he painted himself as a fruitcake. of course, maybe i have it all wrong, and all angels are packing heat.

  5. nonnie9999

of course it was the elk’s fault! if the elk had been armed, he could have shot first!

  6. Got a Grip

TRM, I know for a fact that not all Republicans are as you’ve described. My first husband’s father, one of the finest men I’ve ever known, was a real Republican, the fiscally conservative kind. He was a man of intellect, a man of principle, a man I still honor after all these years, long after his passing. I spent many a lazy evening discussing politics with him, arguing my points against his. He was a good man, and I respected his views even as I disagreed with them.

The trouble is, the Republican party has been overtaken with just the kind of people you describe. Republican politicians espouse the very kinds of religious bullshit you decry, and they do it for the most venal of reasons – they’re pandering. I don’t for a moment believe that 99% of them are Christians at heart. It is a tool that they use to get into power and stay there.

I don’t believe that all Republicans are bad people. I have evidence to the contrary, both of those that are religious and those that aren’t. But as long as there are those in power that display the kind of hypocritical behavior that is rampant within the Republican party today, then people like nonnie and I will be there to poke fun and ridicule them freely.

As to you, dear TRM, understand that while we may disagree on many issues and that I’m likely to abuse you for it in jest, I respect you and appreciate your coming here to allow me to abuse you. Beyond that, I’m an equal opportunity abuser. Just ask nonnie, she’ll tell you…. 😉

  7. nonnie9999

it’s true, trm. we used to call her gotta the abuser. don’t worry, i will protect you.

  8. Friend of the court

Nightowl, I tried to send you an email. I don’t know if it worked or not. My computer is a little demented. I hesitate to post my email address here, because TRM might send me virtual anthrax, even though I have been nice to him since nonnie told me to.

  9. Friend of the court

Oh Lord, please let me kill this elk. This I prey, Amen. God may not be dead but, I wouldn’t be surprised if he has moved to a different neighborhood.

  10. nonnie9999

i wonder if huckleberry has an exterminator who comes to his house to kill bugs or if he just prays for an angel to guide his shoe so he can squish them himself.

  11. nonnie9999

    fotc,
if you are having problems with email, i can email nightowl your addy or vice versa.

  12. Got a Grip

I don’t Huckleberry would never kill a bug with his shoe. He’d invite in a bunch of illegal immigrants to do it for him and pay them a penny a bug. It’s the Christian thing to do.

As for racist crackers, I have a delightful cheeseball recipe that is delicious when served with them. I’ll share it with everyone, if you’d like. ‘Tis the season….

  13. Friend of the court

Thanks nonnie, I got a neat card from nightowl, so it must have worked. 🙂

  14. Friend of the court

Hey nonnie, I just heard that December 16th is the date of the Boston Tea Party. You were wise to choose such a worthy date for your birthday!

  15. nonnie9999

    gotta,
you are probably right. however, a penny a bug sounds awfully extravagant for a rethug. he probably just gives them table scraps. i look forward to your cheeseball recipe.

  16. nonnie9999

    fotc,
i found out that the boston tea party was on my bday when i was a kid, and i was thrilled that something that famous happened on my day. maybe that is why, even though i come from a long line of coffee addicts, i have never liked coffee. don’t like the taste or even the smell of it. i have always loved iced tea. i drink it all the time. it’s some kind of cosmic thing.
it’s also beethoven’s bday. and jane austen’s. and noel coward’s. and margaret mead’s (i went to one of her lectures when i was in college).

  17. Friend of the court

Wow! That’s quite a line up. They are in good company.

  18. nonnie9999

you have some company, too, fotc. born on december 13th:
    Jamie Foxx
Ted Nugent–well, okay, maybe not so proud about that one….
    Richard Darryl Zanuck (producer)
    Christopher Plummer
    Dick Van Dyke
    and there’s this:

December 13, 1934 Mark Hellinger Theater (Warner Bros) opens at 237 W 51st St. New York City
why is that significant? because mark hellinger was my father’s cousin! 😀

  19. nightowl724

gotta, a cheeseball recipe would be fine for the holidays! I’ll take it to work for the neo-cons there and serve it with Ritzy crackers, Elitist-Club crackers, and Scotch-and-Soda crackers.

  20. nightowl724

Speaking of tea parties, CodePink is having one of their own. Members (and others) are being encouraged to withhold 7% of their federal taxes to protest the Iraqi occupation. The details are here:

    http://www.codepinkalert.org/article.php?id=3760

  21. TRM

OK nightowl, enough is enough, I thought i was in the company of “decent” liberals
do you actually condone anything the code pink wackos do?
They are the worst form of scum

  22. nightowl724

Personally, TRM, I think the illegal occupation of Iraq and the unnecessary blood-letting and profiteering on all sides of the conflict because we were tricked into a supposed “War on Terr’r” is “indecent” and “scummy!”

While I don’t support every single action carried out by any one group – including CodePink – I do indeed “condone” in general their members’ persistent, non-violent protests for peace and justice. I not only respect and admire their spunk, I wish I could be more like them!

As far as being a “decent liberal,” you obviously haven’t been reading my posts at places such as Daily Kos, or you’d know better. (And, why would you, of course? I don’t hang out much at conservative blogs, either.)

Anyway, I classify myself more as a “passionate progressive” in most categories, but I am quite socially and financially conservative in a few areas that might surprise you. My dark side, I suppose…

So, TRM, what’s so “scummy” about CodePink, in your opinion?

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Code_Pink
    http://www.codepinkalert.org/

The peace part or the justice part? Their anti-Hillary, anti-Pelosi, or anti-Dems stance? Their anti-rape or anti-torture beliefs? Their pro-impeachment or pro-universal healthcare work? The fact that it is a powerful group of women? Cindy Sheehan’s involvement? You just don’t like pink?

    I mean, what’s not to like? (ha-ha)

  23. Got a Grip

Now, now, nightowl. You know there’s nothing on earth more scummy than a bunch of military wives and mothers protesting that their beloved husbands/children have either been kept in a senseless war to aid and abet the chickenhawks and their oil company pals for 3 or 4 continuous tours without leave, or better yet, what’s left of them sent home in a lovely box with a flag on it. They’re just supporting the terrorists, who hate us for our freedom, don’t ya’ know (insert eye-rolling emoticon here)…..

  24. Got a Grip

TRM, how’s that list coming of how we “libs” are destroying America? I’m still waiting…… 😉

  25. TRM

    Illegal occupation?

Are there world “justice bringers” other than us?

The peace part or the justice part?

Peace is a dream, overwhelming force is justice and reality. Especially when it means ones sovereign survival.

    Their anti-Hillary, anti-Pelosi, or anti-Dems stance?

Code pink is traitorous and in days of old would have invoked a hanging.

    Their anti-rape or anti-torture beliefs?

Their only belief is the overthrow of the government. If they gave a shit about these issues they wouldn’t seek to “have coffee” with the enemy. anti rape? anti torture? Are you familiar with sharia law?

Their pro-impeachment or pro-universal healthcare work?

They are underqualified moron’s and no where near qualified to address such issues.

The fact that it is a powerful group of women?

They are a pathetic group of lesbian, cat feeders. My wife is a woman.

    Cindy Sheehan’s involvement?

Sheehan should be hung by the neck until death.. for disgracing her son’s service.

    You just don’t like pink?

I like pink… my wife has an extensive pink knickers collection.

    I mean, what’s not to like? (ha-ha)

    A lot…

  26. Got a Grip

Oh, TRM, there is so much to say about your comment, I don’t know where to begin. But let me just start with this. Our government has not brought justice to any part of the world, not since Bush took office. He is a moron, a coward, a bully, a petulant child who has moved on from BB guns to the real thing. We are not the world police. And if we hadn’t been sticking our noses and our military bases into Islamic countries where they don’t belong, 9/11 would never have happened in the first place.

As someone who has taken part in my share of peaceful protests and marched along side of Code Pink on more than one occasion, I can tell you for a fact that they’re up to nothing more than expressing what the majority of Americans feel – we’re headed in a dozen different wrong directions. I don’t always agree with their tactics, but I respect their right to use them, as guaranteed in the Constitution.

And as someone who was raised to be one of those Bible-thumping crackers you were complaining about yesterday and lived to tell about it AND lived in the middle east long enough to know and understand how the majority of Muslims think and behave, I can tell you that there is no difference from what the fundamentalists preach and Sharia law which, by the way, is NOT the law of most Islamic countries (although after the bang-up job that Bush has done with his bullying to destroy the fragile balance there, is now much more prevalent than it ever was before). AND, the countries that are the ones most likely to stone someone for going against Sharia law are the ones that Bush considers his dearest friends, while he has destroyed one of the most secular of all the Islamic countries and made it a certainty that what is left will surely be one of the most strident supporters of radical Islam.

In short, I know from hard won experience that you don’t know what the fuck you’re talking about.

  27. nightowl724

    Cool beans! A pillow fight!

Yes, TRM, it is an illegal occupation by every national and international standard. We engaged in a pre-emptive strike on Iraq and then invaded her based on falsified reports of WMD and ties to 9-11 to illegally control her natural resources. Knowing this, we remain – against the will of both the Iraqi and the American people, and the opinion of the rest of the world.

Hmm… “Are there world ‘justice bringers’ other than us?” Sure, but whose justice? Bushco’s? A wrathful Christian God’s? The Klan’s? The Crypts or the Bloods? The Soprano’s? Superman’s or Batman’s? Yours or mine? There are 194 countries in the world. The so-called Coalition of the Willing has only 49 member nations (25%), of which only 33 have been involved with the Iraqi occupation (17%). Only five countries ever sent 100 or more troops (2.5%). Most remaining countries will soon withdraw all or most of their troops; 18 others have already withdrawn completely. The world doesn’t want, or need, the kind of justice we have been pushing of late!

For now, peace is a dream because so many people continue to believe, somehow, despite their claims of “piety” and a “sense of fairness,” that overwhelming force equals justice. Sovereign survival? Again, whose? Bush’s? The United States? Please see the definitions and synonyms for “sovereign.” By what virtue should either be considered to have any sovereign rights in the first place?

    http://tinyurl.com/2qplv4

As far as the “good old days” of hanging someone for exercising their First Amendment right to freedom of speech… Maybe you are confusing our country with the old Nazi Germany, or with one of the modern-day Banana Republics or Arab nations we say we’re trying to liberate! Our country’s recent activities, especially those of the Bush Administration, have caused fear and loathing in the world. We have become our own enemy. Why would anyone want to be like us anymore?
    http://tinyurl.com/328xp7

“Seeking to ‘have coffee’ with the enemy” has a name, but Bush, Bolton, and Rice seem to have forgotten it. It’s called “diplomacy,” and it is the only way to ensure the future of the earth and humankind. And, Sharia Law is different from the radical laws of other religions how exactly?

Uh-oh. You are stooping to name-calling and generalizations now when you call CodePink members “under-qualified, pathetic morons and lesbians.” That’s not like you, TRM! And, if some are lesbians, this has what to do with the conversation? (Some are men, too, BTW.) What is a “cat feeder?” Seriously, I don’t know and I couldn’t find any reference to it on the web. Compared to say, our C-average, language mangling, business bungling, Constitution tromping president, do these really look like under-qualified morons to you? ? What would it take for someone to be “qualified,” then? Or, a “moron,” for that matter?
    http://tinyurl.com/2w9mln
    http://tinyurl.com/2re6ry
    http://tinyurl.com/2plsyw

You said, “Sheehan should be hung by the neck until death… for disgracing her son’s service.” Again, this would be because she uses one of her Constitutional rights? She did not disgrace Casey’s service – Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld, Powell, Rice, Blair, Halliburton, KBR – they were some of the ones who disgraced him. There is nothing righteous about our invasion and usurpation of Iraq. From the beginning, it has been a dishonorable endeavor, tainting the efforts of our brave and courageous soldiers, subjecting them to unwarranted risk, and destroying lives without just cause.

Of all the topics to which I have seen you respond to here, TRM, nothing seems to have set you off as much as CodePink. I surely do wonder why…

You guys drove me to drinking last night…. lemme get rid of this hangover and collect my thoughts….

  30. Got a Grip

Take your time, TRM. Sorry we drove you to drink (unless, of course, you were happy to take the trip). Be forewarned that you’ve chosen to hang out with a crowd of aggressive, intelligent, well-armed progressives so the return fire might be blistering. Just know that as we aim our wrath-filled missiles at you, we love you anyway. Hate the sin, love the sinner….. 😉

  31. Got a Grip

And what, by the way, is D=S? I haven’t had my tea yet today and I’m perfectly willing to admit that the reference has gone straight over my head….

Hey Got a, if you go to TRM’s blog, don’t forget to post a link to Wexler’s petition. Also, his quiz is trick questions.

  36. Got a Grip

Thanks, fotc. I’ll head over there in a bit, I have a bit of business to take care of, and I must fortify myself beforehand lest I be overcome with the desire to fling my monitor of something. I’ll be sure to post a link to Wexler when I get there……

  37. nightowl724

My very first thought when I saw D=S was Democrats = Satan! I’m so glad TRM didn’t mean to say that, at least!

TRM, I’ll be visiting your site a bit later. I have a feeling you are about to return the favor by driving ME to drink tonight!

    Got a Grip,,,
If we aren’t the world police then why does everyone, and I mean everyone, always beg us for intervention and help, not to mention the money we spread across the globe every day.

“And if we hadn’t been sticking our noses and our military bases into Islamic countries where they don’t belong, 9/11 would never have happened in the first place.”

Got a grip, you may need to “adjust” your grip, that is the most naive statement I have heard come from your mouth. Do you honestly beleive that? That islamic terror is something that sprang up to protest Bush’s heavy handedness? Hypathetically let’s say that America one day woke up and “realized the error of her ways” and pulled all troops out of all foreign theaters. Do you honeslty think the violence would end?

“I know from hard won experience that you don’t know what the fuck you’re talking about.”

    ditto…

  42. nonnie9999

iraq begged us for intervention and help? funny how other countries do beg for help and are ignored other than a few dollars thrown in their general direction (only, of course, if they promise there will be no nookie). iraq did nothing to us. they were not a threat to us. it was a manufactured crisis.
now, trm, go take a couple tylenol, and go lie down.
