From TALKING POINTS MEMO:
The GOP continued its bloody walk into the Medicare buzzsaw Wednesday, when 40 out of 47 Senate Republicans voted in support of the House GOP budget, and its plan to phase out and privatize the popular entitlement program.
The test vote failed by a vote of 57-40. But the roll call illustrates that Medicare privatization — along with deep cuts to Medicaid and other social services — remains the consensus position of the GOP despite the growing political backlash against them.
Voting with all of the Democrats against debating the plan were Sens. Scott Brown (R-MA), Olympia Snowe (R-ME) — both 2012 incumbents — along with Sens. Susan Collins (R-ME) and Lisa Murkowski (R-AK). Rand Paul (R-KY) voted against it because it wasn’t radical enough.
Sens. Chuck Schumer (D-NY), Pat Roberts (R-KS), and Kay Bailey Hutchison (R-TX) did not vote.
Democrats intentionally scheduled the vote less than 24 hours after a Democrat won a special election in New York’s 26th — and heavily Republican — congressional district, on the strength of defending Medicare from a GOP onslaught. The outcome of that election heightened the political stakes, but sent few Republicans bolting for the exits.
…snip…
To shelter GOP dissidents from the vote to privatize Medicare, but also to shore up their bona fides on the right, the Senate also held a test vote on a similarly austere alternative budget authored by Sen. Pat Toomey (R-PA). The key difference? The Toomey plan remains vague on the question of how to reduce Medicare spending over time. All but three voting Republicans — Collins, Snowe, and Brown — voted to proceed with that plan, which would slash spending at a faster rate than even the House budget.
From the Atlantic wire:
Update: The Senate voted down Ryan’s bill 40 to 57 Tuesday afternoon. Five Republicans voted against the plan: Lisa Murkowski, Scott Brown, Susan Collins, Olympia Snowe, and Rand Paul. Politico’s David Rogers writes that it’s a “tell-tale sign of trouble ahead” that there were more moderates voting nay than in a March test vote. And no moderate Democrats defected to vote for the plan, either, though Chuck Schumer didn’t vote.
…snip…
Rep. Paul Ryan isn’t backing away from his plan to overhaul Medicare the day after, even in his estimation, the issue helped swing a special election in a conservative New York district to Democrats. Tuesday night, Ryan posted a second video, complete with sleek infographics, explaining why the program had to be changed. Wednesday morning, he told MSNBC that Democrats were using “Mediscare” tactics, and told the Peterson Foundation Summit that they are “are shamelessly demagoguing and distorting” the Medicare plan by “trying to scare seniors and using this as a political weapon.” Republicans have to act now, Ryan said, because “If we wait, if we allow these ‘Mediscare’ tactics to continue… to inflict paralysis on our system, do you know what happens then? Austerity.”

Olympia Snowe thanks you greatly for letting her experiencing the upper body of Dolly Parton.
if you look at the original, you’ll see that a drastic breast reduction has occurred.
Omg, I think Nonnie gave her a breast reduction. 😯
i’m a doctah!!! 😀
+1
I don’t know much else about her record, but Lisa Murkowski did support health care benefits for members of the Alaska Territorial Guard. They were Alaskan natives, who acted as trackers and guides and were eventually incorporated into the forces that defended the Aleutians and Alaska from the Japanese in World War 2. Considering the DOD wanted to keep refusing funding, basically until they all died of old age, her support of the funding was a very compassionate act – more so, considering her party of affiliation. I hope she continues to show the good sense she has so far!
i hope that she relishes her new-found independence and stands her ground against her fellow rethuglicans, especially those who threw her under the bus in the last election.
Revenge is a dish best served cold. That’s easy when you’re from Alaska.
i think the only reason she’s still a rethug is that she doesn’t want to lose her seats on the committees she’s on.
Hi, Na-ah-ah-ah-ah-nie! I wanted to tha-ah-ah-ah-ah-ank you for stopping by and saying “HI!” to John and me! Bah-ah-ah-ah-aye!
yayyyy!!! blackjack came to visit! you’re a handsome devil, blackjack! 😀
Dick Cheney dubbed Paul Ryan “worship” worthy today. Ryan is so fucked. 😆
Of course, “worship” is an euphemism for “jerk off”.
Circle Jerk.
with lots of jerks.
mucho jerks.
i saw that. i was gagging. i do that whenever i see deadeye dick, but this was particularly nauseating. when the hell is someone in the media going to question eddie munst…i mean, paul ryan’s economic creds? he’s not qualified to figure out a national budget, and he’s just not very smart. if he was smart, he wouldn’t be the anvil around the neck of the rethuglican party. of course, he had help from and equally unsmart bronzo the clown and widdle ewic cantaw.
And I seen a photo of Tom McClintock with Eddie sorta bent over and writing new crap in his plan while the others in the photo has shit eating grins that looked like a jackass eating briars with self congra….check that, just heard Ryan had included cutting the cheese.
eddie munst…i mean, paul ryan cutting the cheese would be a lot less offensive than most of the other cuts he made. 😉
Cantor and Old Yeller are trying to downplay the results of this election and it’s ominous forecast for the Grand Old Pricks. If it meant so little why were both of them here stumping for Calamity Jane? Geneee Cream Ale ? Hot Wings? A Chris Lee Tranny Polaroid party ? Re: cap’n Chuckleberry that’ll be me in the spiffy Gortons fisherman get up. I also voice an Italian mobster hermit crab, a chollo sea turtle, an east side of buffalo polish sounding whale, a punjabi Bonita fish in our animation sequences. There is no talk of dinosaurs or Darwin on set but the production crew is all 20 something film school kids who roll with tongue in cheek. Love your poster btw. Munster is going down hard and quick. Can we say Kryptonite ?
i love watching them sweat! what would really make my day is if, while he’s sweating, all the orange would stream down the collar of bronzo the clown’s shirt.
i just watched the video at least 6 times (by the way, it looks much better on youtube where it doesn’t get squished). i loved it! you have such a kind face, mick…i mean, captain, and i promise not to tell anyone the truth about you. 😉
i love how the spinning is so out of control. i know i have said many times that i think most of america is pretty stupid but one thing they ARE NOT stupid about is health care – and what it will cost when you are a senior and the fact that NO insurance company will insure a elderly person at any cost.
there is nothing to say that hasnt been said about the absolute evil and greed of the everyone in the GOP – i would like to think that some idiots in this country are beginning to see that other than their vote every 2 years – the republicans could give two shits about anyone not a member of their country club.
ps – paul ryan so reminds me of ralph reed – i could swear both of them are seeds of the Boys from Brazil
i want the dramamine concession. they must be so nauseous from all the spinning. people are still pretty stupid, even when it comes to health care. remember that the idiots voted for rethugs last election, because of all the lies about death panels and the other evils of obamacare. however, medicare is pretty easy to understand, so the rethugs can’t spin their devious lies about it. maybe this will wake some people up, and they’ll finally realize that the present crop of rethugs do nothing but lie to them.

Bwahaaa! Actually Paulie, the Dems don’t even have to work at this because you and you’re buddies have your heads so far up big corporate ass, you don’t even realize how much you’ve pissed off the whole country.
you’re right, jeb. for campaign ads, the dems should keep their mouths shut and just put rethuglican remarks on endless loops.
Mayberry, RFD…
OK, I was just thinking about Paulie’s “vouchers” and the whole Rethug obsession with vouchers for healthcare, education, etc. Besides the fact that I suspect that a voucher will get me at best, a prorated discount on parking or a crappy lunch at the hospital, I was wondering what they will back them up with? Gold? Inquiring minds want to know.
with tax cuts for the rich, of course. i’m not sure how that works, but that’s always their answer. 😐
Those up for re-election seem to “care” more about medicare.
i think that snowe would have voted against it anyway, and murkowski just got reelected. collins is always a maybe. nekkid scotty, on the other hand, has no true convictions whatsoever. he originally said he liked ryan’s plan and would vote for it, but then he read the polls. i really hope massachusetts finds a decent dem to run against him. he only got where he is by embracing the teabaggers, but he immediately threw them under the bus when he got to d.c..
Why does Eddie Munster have three mommies? Will this make the baby Jesus cry?
😆 those are the babysitters. they tied him up like that to keep him under control, but they goofed by giving him caffeine.
somehow a ‘government for the people, by the people’ seems to have gotten lost. Too bad. It seemed like a decent idea.
well, you know how those rethugs love to rewrite history! 😀
