Here Comes the Bribe

From salon:

President Trump is rewarding senators that support him on impeachment with bundles of campaign cash, drawing accusations of political bribery.

…snip…

On Wednesday, Trump’s campaign issued a fundraising appeal to supporters to donate funds that would be equally distributed among Sens. Cory Gardner, R-Colo., Joni Ernst, R-Iowa, and Thom Tillis, R-N.C., all of whom are supporting the resolution [to condemn the House impeachment inquiry] and face tough re-election battles in 2020.

Drowning in Disgust

From NEWSWEEK:

President Trump’s former ethics chief said the president’s decision to show off a $40 Trump campaign merchandise baseball cap on a visit to storm-struck Texas raises ethics concerns.

The president was pictured wearing the Official USA 45th Presidential Hats in two pictures released by the White House over the weekend, and in TV footage of an official visit to the state Tuesday. Both hats, described as “Proudly Made in the USA,” are sold as merchandise via the Trump campaign website.

Oh, Brother!

From First Read at MSNBC:

Herman Cain enthusiastically embraced the Koch brothers — saying he is their “brother from another mother” — just hours after facing a legal complaint challenging his campaign’s ties to a Koch brother affiliated non profit.

“Just so I can clarify this for the media, this may be a breaking news announcement for the media: I am the Koch brothers’ brother from another mother,” Cain said during a speech at the Americans for Prosperity gathering in Washington, D.C. “Yes. I’m their brother from another mother! And proud of it!”

What most people don’t know is that, when Herb Hermie, Dave, and Chuck used sit around and talk about how they love the John Birch Society (like dear old dad) and Ayn Rand, they were known as Larry, Darryl, and their other brother Darryl.

Cantor’s National Council for a New America Meets Its Death Panel

From the Richmond Times-Dispatch:

Rep. Eric Cantor, R-7th, has pulled the plug on a national organization that was launched with much fanfare a year ago.

John Murray, a spokesman for Cantor, confirmed a report from the Washington newspaper Roll Call that Cantor’s National Council for a New America is “in a suspended state.”

The Junior Senator From Neva-duhhhh

From J. Patrick Coolican the LAS VEGAS SUN:

Last summer, Sen. John Ensign was with his wife, Darlene, at Palace Station for a meeting of Nevada Republican women.

It was a somewhat awkward venue, coming soon after he had confessed to an affair with his best friend’s wife, Cynthia Hampton, who had been Ensign’s campaign treasurer and whose husband, Doug Hampton, had been his Senate co-chief of staff.

Ensign’s chrome-colored hair just so and his shirt stiffly starched, as always, he plowed ahead.

“I want to first acknowledge my lovely bride. My wife, Darlene, is here. Anybody who does this job knows that, without a very supportive spouse, we wouldn’t be able to accomplish the things we were able to accomplish, especially when I go to Washington,” he said, awkwardness filling the air as if from a leaky propane tank.

The Breakfast Schlub

From MinnPost:

Minnesota 6th District Rep. Michele Bachmann will burnish her conservative standing when she appears at the 1st Annual Tea Party Convention in February. The Nashville event also will feature former Alaska Gov. and vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin.

City Pages says Bachmann will give a breakfast speech, while Palin is the keynote speaker at the Saturday evening main event Feb. 6.

Tickets for the weekend convention are now on sale for $549 but don’t include accommodations at the Gaylord Opryland Hotel and Convention Center.

549 bucks? They had better have something good for breakfast! Don’t worry, kids, I’m on the case! I’ll find out what the breakfast menu is. (Make your own jokes about teabaggers having a convention at the Gaylord.)

Power Has Its Privileges

[Breaking news at the bottom!]

From The Washington Post:

GOP Leader Tight-Lipped on Ensign

Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell (Ky.) repeatedly refused to answer questions Friday about a New York Times report that embattled Sen. John Ensign (R-Nev.) negotiated a cover-up of his extramarital affair with a campaign staffer, with his friend Sen. Tom Coburn (R-Okla.) serving as a financial intermediary.

How can Mitch McConnell be tight-lipped when he has no lips?

C-section on C Street?

I’m never going to talk about that with anybody. I never will, not to a court of law, not to an ethics committee, not to anybody — because that is privileged communication that I will never reveal to anybody.

That was said by Senator Tom Coburn. He won’t tell on John Ensign, because Coburn’s a physician, and he’s playing the doctor/patient confidentiality card. Yes, Tom is a doctor. He’s an ob/gyn. That can only mean one thing. Congratulations, Senator Ensign!! When are you due?
