Cheney Leaves the House of Twitler

From AP News:

No. 3 House Republican Liz Cheney was clinging to her post Wednesday as party leaders lined up behind an heir apparent, signaling that fallout over her clashes with former President Donald Trump was becoming too much for her to overcome.

Unbowed, she implored her GOP colleagues to pry themselves from a Trump “cult of personality,” declaring that the party and even American democracy were at stake. “History is watching,” she said.

Trump issued a statement giving his “COMPLETE and TOTAL Endorsement” to Rep. Elise Stefanik of New York to replace Cheney. Stefanik, a 36-year-old Trump loyalist who’s played an increasingly visible role within the GOP, responded quickly, highlighting his backing to colleagues who will decide her political future.

My 2¢: Listening to talking heads exalting Liz Cheney as the new Joan of Arc turns my stomach. She’s looking down the road. She thinks the GOP will come to its senses and cast Twitler into the bowels of history and move on. She’s not a martyr; she’s politically savvy and making sure she can run for higher office in the future or at least make plenty of money with a book explaining why she is the new Joan of Arc.

2¢ more: Shecky McCarthy is a spineless asshole whom we can only pray will never be Speaker of the House. Elise “The Little Slurmaid” Stefanik is an opportunist and nothing more.

Hayley Spills

From THINK PROGRESS :

On Fox News Sunday today, Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour (R) continued to aggressively downplay the massive BP oil gusher, explaining that tar balls washing up on his state’s beaches are “no big deal” because you can “pick them up and throw them in the bag.” And instead of attacking BP for causing the spill, he blamed the media for creating a “misperception” of crisis by daring to call attention to one of the worst environmental disasters in American history:

BARBOUR: Well, the truth is, Chris, we have had virtually no oil. … We have had a few tar balls but we have tar balls every year, as a natural product of the Gulf of Mexico. … So, tar balls are no big deal. In fact, I read that Pensacola or the Florida beaches when they have tar balls yesterday didn’t even close. They just sent people out to pick them up and throw them in the bag. The biggest, the biggest negative impact for us has been the news coverage. … The average viewer to this show thinks that the whole coast from Florida to Texas is ankle-deep in oil. … So it may be hard for the viewer to understand, but the worst thing for us has been how our tourist season has been hurt by the misperception of what is going on down here. The Mississippi Gulf Coast is beautiful. As I tell people, the coast is clear. Come on down!

Cheesy in the Big Easy

From The New York Times:

NEW ORLEANS — Should Republicans be the party of no? Or the party of yes?

There was a hint of disagreement on that count as a parade of Republicans took the stage here on Friday at one of the largest party gatherings — Sarah Palin rallies not included — since the Republican National Convention two years ago.

The Gang’s All There!

From The New York Times:

WASHINGTON — For 30 minutes on Thursday, Mitt Romney, a likely Republican candidate for president in 2012, offered a systematic indictment of what he described as the failed presidency of Barack Obama. A little earlier, a crowd of conservatives whooped in delight as a speaker made coy allusions to Mr. Obama’s youthful experimentation with cocaine.

Republican leaders took the stage at a conservative conference here to pay tribute to the Tea Party movement and soberly pledge to defeat Republicans who did not adhere to conservative views. Speaker after speaker drew hoots as they mocked Mr. Obama for his use of a teleprompter, seemingly oblivious to the teleprompter that rose from the floor before them.

The setting was the Conservative Political Action Conference, and it produced a sometimes incongruous meshing of mainstream Republicans — presidential candidates, leaders of Congress, political thinkers — with the often rowdy crowd of activists who have typically lent a slight air of the carnival to this long-time Washington political gathering.

Not Haiti, Just Hate

From MEDIA MATTERS:

As the full scope of the devastation in Haiti was just beginning to be understood Wednesday, MSNBC and CNN devoted extensive coverage to the crisis, including during their primetime coverage. Fox News did cover the aftermath of the earthquake in its dayside programming, but the Three Musketeers — Beck, O’Reilly and Hannity — couldn’t be bothered.

Beck devoted his entire show to an interview with Sarah Palin. He didn’t mention Haiti once but instead chose to read her his diary. To be fair, Beck’s interview may have been taped prior to the Haiti crisis, but he certainly wasn’t obligated to air it Wednesday. It’s not as if Fox News viewers won’t hear her views now that she’s a Fox News contributor.

Be Afraid, Be Very Afraid!

Good new, kids! The problem of terrorism has been pinpointed, and the solution is at hand. From DIGITAL JOURNAL:

The ranking Republican on the House Homeland Security Committee believes one thing President Obama could do to fix the holes in the US’s air security system is to say the word “terrorism” more.
United State congressman Peter King (R-NY) made those comments to Good Morning America’s George Stephanopoulos while they were discussing specific ways in which the Obama administration could improve air traffic security measures. “Name one other specific recommendation that the president could implement right now to fix this.” Stephanopoulos asked King. “I think one main thing would be to — just himself — to use the word terrorism more often,” King responded.

Goodbye 2009!

To the tune of My Favorite Things (music by Richard Rodgers, lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II):

Birthers and Deathers, and all kinds of crazy,
A Twitterer quits, ’cause she’s just too damned lazy,
Rescuing banks ’cause they’re too big to fail,
Tales about the Appalachian trail.
